We rebuild tropical fisheries with coastal communities
Blue Ventures is a marine conservation organization that puts people first. We support coastal fishers in remote and rural communities to rebuild fisheries, restore ocean life and build lasting pathways to prosperity. Our work began two decades ago in Madagascar’s remote coastal communities and is growing globally. Across a dozen countries, we’re partnering with traditional fishers and community organizations to design, scale, strengthen and sustain fisheries management and conservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate for reform, and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities across the globe.
Summary job description
We are currently recruiting for a Communications and Social Media Officer role within our central communications team. Reporting to the Head of Communications, this is a full-time role based in one of Blue Ventures’ offices, with potential international travel to work closely with field colleagues, partners, field teams, and communities.
The Communications and Social Media Officer will play a vital role in building the visibility of Blue Ventures’ work, particularly on social media channels. This exciting role encompasses shaping stories from communities and partners, sharing learning, crafting content to advocate for ocean protection and the rights of small-scale fishers, and finding creative ways to connect and raise the voices of fishers to amplify conservation action and impact a range of audiences internationally.
You will demonstrate a proven track record of producing communications and social media outputs. We’re looking for someone with a passion for producing compelling and far-reaching digital content, and a proven ability to create pieces that speak to a variety of audiences and across a range of platforms. With a background in digital media, journalism, science communication, or media relations, you will be passionate about marine conservation, the environment, and using innovative storytelling to raise awareness of the crisis facing our ocean. You will be ahead of the curve when it comes to social media and online publishing, and knowledgeable about news and developments across our sector, including climate action, environmental and climate justice, and scalable solutions to the climate and ecological emergency.
You’ll be able to work independently and in teams and networks across different time zones to research and produce engaging and accurate content that reaches a wide range of people, including tailoring content to specific target audiences and platforms. You will have excellent photo and video editing skills, and your writing style will show empathy, humility, and sensitivity, and reflect Blue Ventures’ core values.
You will thrive in environments that are dynamic, fast-paced, collegiate, and ambitious, and have experience working with precision and pace while juggling multiple projects and solving complex problems in challenging situations.
The successful candidate will be a motivated, proactive, and highly organized individual. We are looking for someone who is open to new ideas and embraces innovation, and who can demonstrate experience in building effective working partnerships remotely. Assessment of applications will include candidates’ alignment with Blue Ventures’ core values and mission to support human rights-based approaches to marine conservation and fisheries management.
